A Message from Bill:
This years' fourth of July bocce tournament completely re-vitalized my underlying feelings about Bocce ball in General! I honestly believe that there is no other sport wherein people from all walks of life can together, be competitive, do their very best, yet, at the same time be so very helpful to one another. Where else does one see the winning and losing team members both shaking hands, hugging, and thanking one another for a great game of bocce, and then staying around to help root on the team that just beat them?

The social aspect here is almost un describable in words. people coming together for the love of a fairly simple, yet complicated game, seeing old friends, and always, but always, making new friends that for sure, will last a lifetime! Older folks, younger players, men& women, and of all ethnic backgrounds come together and become one, in the enjoyment this wonderful, exciting game that has and remains to increase in its popularity.

Of course any tournament such as this does not just happen! Months of planning, hours on the phone, structuring the tournament, getting the meals and preparation there to feed all involved; prepping of all our beautiful courts, going door to door , and asking for local merchant prize donations, keeping track of all the entries and man ageing all the cash / checks received and keeping a updating of all, as well as all time spent in going to purchase all the required food, beverages, and all the materials which it takes to put on a tournament such as this.. at times can seem almost an overwhelming task! And not to mention the very long hours involved behind the scenes as well as the day of this tournament.

Personally, the fourth of July had me down at our courts around 5:45 am that morning, and I finally went home around 7:00pm that same evening, which makes for a very long , busy day in the sun! But I would do it all over tomorrow just for the smiles, the handshakes, the hugs& kisses, and the fun and smiles on all the faces of all who participated, not to mention enjoying this wonderful game we call BOCCE!

Without the help of Carlos Amspoker, we could never have organized all the teams competing, the structuring and bracketing of all the 35 (two -person ) Teams.

My special thanks to our Own Commissioner, Gene Rittburg, who was there along with myself from the beginning until the very end of this tournament, seeking almost all of the local donations from local merchants for raffle drawings, almost all the shopping for all the various food and accessories provided to the teams that day, for his ongoing support in each and every single facet along the way, I send my heartfelt thank you's!!

To Toi Silva and Tony Herndon, who working feverishly and continue to do so, in so prepping our courts week in and week out, to make our court surfaces, along with all the surrounding areas, so perfect and pristine and such a joy to play upon, I extend a special note of sincere thanks, as one who has his own share of doing the very hard and long hours spent in keeping our courts the best, in the entire world! Thanks Toi and Tony!!

And since our unfortunate fire, and the absolutely quick response from so many to get us back up and running again, a most special thank you to one and all!

And do to the fact we were still without a P.O. system, a very special thank you to Danny White, who generously provided us with a great p.a./ sound system throughout the entire day of Bocce. You can visit his store on main St, Martinez, for many musical instruments, as well as music lessons as well.

To My Good Friend, Robert " Shorty" Ford, although we were not able to actually play in this years tournament, was there from early morning till way after dark that day, helping with anything and everything that required attention, and then some. My special thanks dear Friend!

And to Mr. Danny Chavez, who cooked, to perfection, our wonderful lunchtime barbeque meal, which was the complete rave of all who attended, my sincere and special thank you Danny!!

And for sure, I thank each and every one of you who played in Our annual Tournament. Your play along with your total sportsmanship qualities always exemplifies the essence , the true meaning of what Bocce Is To Not only The Martinez Bocce Federation, but to all those around the united states, and the world who love and enjoy the sport of Bocce Ball.

My sincere thanks and gratitude to you one and all, for making this , I believe, The most successful 4th of July tournament ever. We look forward to seeing you all again this same time next year.

Sincerely Yours

    FIRE at Bocce Courts:

Early in the morning, Thursday March 13th we experienced a devastating fire at our Bocce storage shed. Despite the timely response of the Contra Costa County Fire District, the building/roof, its contents, sound system, refrigerator, micro wave, etc. are destroyed. Fortunately we have been able to salvage the 15 sets of new Bocce balls and 10 sets of the old. With some cleaning they will be playable. The new scoreboards had been removed and were being cleaned for the upcoming season.

We firmly believe that this was a case of arson.

The shed will be rebuilt, but will take time. Volunteer help cleaning up and dismantling is appreciated.

We are in the process of setting up temporary housing for the equipment needed for the season, starting April 21st. PLEASE bear with us!

Our liability insurance does not cover fire or vandalism.

ALL CONTRIBUTATIONS WILL BE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED.

    Respectively,

    Gene Rittburg
    Commissioner

    Court Maintenance Day - April 19, 2008

Court Maintenance begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Everything is usually completed by 3:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and lend a hand for as little or as long as they can.

This year we are going to replace several picnic table tops and/or benches as needed. All the necessary lumber, bolts, nuts, cut to length materials, etc. will be there as will a supply of rollers, pans, paintbrushes and stain/paint. All benches, picnic tables, the bulletin board area and the BBQ table will all get a fresh coat. there will also be bags of oyster shell to use in prepping the courts after they have been raked, cleaned and rolled. Some pruning and trimming along natural pathways leading from parking to the courts and in some cases the courts will also be necessary. And of course all of the aisles surrounding the courts and between the courts will be raked and cleaned of all debris.

Last year we had a record turn-out of 51. Hopefully this year it will be even better.

Water and sodas are provided and pizza is usually delivered around noon to feed the troops.
